New radar research factsheet E-mail

USGS has just released a new factsheet called "Management and research applications of long-range surveillance data for birds, bats, and flying insects". A similar sheet for short-range radar (mobile or marine radars, etc.) is in the works. The report can be accessed here or from the USGS Radar Website

Improving demographic monitoring E-mail

Over the next few years, Southeast Partners in Flight will be partnering with the Institute for Bird Populations to improve the value of MAPS stations  throughout the southeast. The initial focus will be on automated data analysis/reporting and targeting effort toward management questions.

We are currently developing a number of automatically updated figures to summarize progress toward monitoring goals in the Southeastern US. The example figure below displays the number of point counts in the USGS Point Count Database for selected southeastern states. The chart is automatically updated as new data are entered into the database.

Analysis tools for time of detection data coming soon E-mail

A partnership between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Southeast Partners in Flight has produced a new data analysis tool for time of detection data. The tool is being tested by refuge biologists in the midwestern US with an anticipated national release in 2009.

Monitoring evaluation tool coming soon E-mail

A partnership between the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Central Hardwoods Joint Venture , and Southeast Partners in Flight has produced an online tool and database to evaluate bird monitoring programs. The tool is currently being tested in selected states with a planned national release in 2009.
